amongst the trees [Feb. 12th, 2008|10:43 pm]
[Current Mood |anxiousanxious]
[Current Music |tegan and sara - welcome home]

well hello there.

the last two weeks or so were dominated by candlelight rehearsal and, eventually, performances. i'm happy to say it went about as well as it could've, given the circumstances (everyone being burned out, several of the singers being sick during the last few days). despite the time commitment, i was glad i took on the part of guitar player and it was a good experience; not quite on the same level as godspell, but that's alright.

phi mu alpha pledging is going very well. being on "the other side" is interesting and it makes me kinda miss those days last semester when i myself was pledging. seeing a great group of kids struggle, but ultimately succeed, is great and actually very inspiring. i'm looking forward to the rest of the semester with the fraternity.

5 of the 6 fireside acts i tried out for made it into the show. fireside, for my non-SMU reading constituency, is a concert put on by SAI that's primarily acoustic and, shall we say, more of an "intimate" nature; thus, the fireside moniker. the 5 songs are as follows.....

-boats and birds: gregory and the hawk - i fell in love with this song sophomore year. kris perkins is singing, should be good.
-it's your love: faith hill and tim mcgraw - i'm not the biggest country fan, but it's kinda catchy and ultimately harmless.
-the way i am: ingrid michaelson - she's blown up in the last few months, and this is her signature song right now. should be good.
-beautiful children: jeremy messersmith - this is the one i'm anxious about, cause i'm singing lead vocals as well as playing guitar. mo is helping me with harmonies. this will mark my first time singing solo in front of an audience, so wish me luck.
-tell him: celine dion and barbra streisand - this closes the show, and is likely to be the most memorable number of the night.

fireside rehearsals are every night next week, so it's probably going to be a tad bit hectic. plus, 2 weeks after that, there's gaslight rehearsals every night of the week. it's going to be a pretty busy month or so.

oh yeah, classes......they're OK. i have 3 psych classes (experimental psych, social psych, psychology of aging) and a theology class (christian view of the human person). christian view of the human person is the only class that hasn't been challenging up to this point, but i'm alright with a lot of work, considering i only have 4 classes this semester.

everything else is kinda ho hum. the radio show is on an indefinite hiatus, and it's not as if it was ever any good to begin with when it was on. bookreader has been on a break due to bryan and neil getting into koo koo kangaroo stuff. writing for the cardinal is fun, in a very silly kind of way. timberwolvestoday.com has been in kind of a lull, due to neil and i both being so busy. ho hum.

it's crazy to think that i've been back at school for more than a month now. so much has happened since we all got back to school that it seems like an entire semester has occurred between then and now. i'm not sure what to think about it.....having so much happen in such a condensed period of time makes everything go by faster, but there are times that i wish i could just lay back and not have so many things on my mind.

maybe that's what this week of break is for. i hope so.

let us so live that when we die even the undertaker will be sorry.

[Current Music |the bees - got to let go]

let's do some bullet points. it's been a while since we've done those, hasn't it?

-i'm really really busy. between classes, phi mu alpha, timberwolvestoday.com, phoneathon, candlelight (i recently got added to the pit band), fireside auditions, possible gaslight bands i'll be in, the radio show, and the ever-present bookreader, there's not a whole lot of free time to enjoy. it's nice to have a lot of stuff to do though.
-i don't think i ever mentioned in this blog that my fish died over christmas break. RIP faygo and mergatroyd.
-my computer is comically slow. there are times where i feel like it takes this computer a lot of effort to be so inefficient and plodding. oh well.
-the australian open is really good TV. too bad federer will win it again though.
-starfox 64 is a really fun game. i have the brains to rule lylat!

[Current Music |long distance runner - after the math]

so i just watched jimmy kimmel live. the main guest was david alan grier, who, as part of his interview, did his infamous "pretend prescription medication names are actually names of black children" skit, which he came up with on a 2004 episode of loveline. the next guest was dr. drew, who, along with discussing his new reality show, talked a bit about loveline and adam carolla.

tear me apart [Jan. 13th, 2008|10:06 pm]
[Current Mood |blahblah]
[Current Music |gregory and the hawk - bravo charlie]

ahem.

there are a few things i'd like to talk about in today's entry.

-i do this just about every year, to little or no response, but i'd like to encourage you to watch the australian open tennis tournament. it began today, and it's very good entertainment, particularly if you're a sportsman or sportswoman. just sayin.
-gregory and the hawk are taking over my life. it's some of the most honest, troubling, awkward, bare, beautiful music i've ever heard. i haven't felt this way about an artist since sufjan.
-sometimes i have to step back and remind myself that i'm here, a senior at st. mary's. it sounds strange, but it feels like life gets so turbulent that we lose track of who we are. i'm trying to make a concerted effort to keep things in perspective at all times, and take time to relax and gather my thoughts.
-pledging for phi mu alpha begins soon. i can't wait.
-sigh

i hardly noticed there were tears in her eyes [Jan. 9th, 2008|11:53 pm]

[Current Music |minus the bear - dog park]

yeah.....awkward.....

so i guess the whole picture journal thing didn't work out as well as i might've hoped. whatever. it was cool to try something a little different than usual, and the lack of A) interesting subject matter B) expertise around a camera and C) time combined for it not being particularly good. oh well, at least there were a few good pictures.

and to be fair, my camera ran out of batteries. and i was without internet for the last 4 days of break. so THERE.

so let's talk a bit about the holidays.

christmas was dull. since college, i've felt increasingly distant from my relatives to the point of awkwardness when there are big social gatherings, like christmas. a lot of my cousins now have spouses whose names i don't know, and a few have kids that i'd never even heard about. it all makes for a very strange and uncomfortable situation. i remember when my cousins were some of my best friends, and there was a consistent group that showed up to family gatherings that everyone knew and was familiar with. times certainly have changed.

new years was alright. nothing too exciting. hanging out with old high school friends is always a treat, and catching up with old ELEMENTARY school friends is even better. so word.

a few highlights from christmas break then.....

-going to 4 wolves games
-watching season 7 of x files
-playing cribbage, gin, and ping pong with my dad
-bookreader practice (yeah, we're still together)
-new years

so a decent break. nothing great, i guess. i'd give it a 5.5.

2008 is upon us, and, as per tradition, it's time to look back upon 2007. it's probably been the year in which the most change occurred in my life, and the year in which the most chances were taken. i transferred schools, i finished up listening to all my lovelines, i spent a summer by away from home, i got my own car, i got into a band, that band played a lot of shows and released an album, i had a few relationships, i started a website, and a lot of smaller things inbetween. 2007 is a year i hope i always remember and recollect when i think about the grand scheme of my life. i obviously don't have the kind of hindsight to judge whether or not 2007 is as important a year as it seems now, but looking just at what was accomplished, i feel a sense of gratitude and pride. it was really a great and fun year.

it makes me think about choices. to me, in a sense, life is a series of educated choices that we make. i think about all the choices that were made leading up to me ending up at st. thomas, and those choices were motivated by fear of the unknown and fear of change. i now think about all the choices that have lead me to being here at st. mary's, and i like to think that those choices have been motivated by exploration and an ever-increasing passion for embracing change, rather than avoiding it. i like where i'm at in life right now, in 2008.

so, in short, let's have a great year. ok?

that's what i thought.

closing up the girl's basketball tourny and a fun time in minneapolis makes up this edition of the photo journal. sorry i haven't been a tad bit more consistent, but sometimes i get busy. i'll try to do better though. i'm missing actually writing about stuff that i think about, so that means once this is all over, i'll have a wet dream of a great entry for you all.

well, i hope so.

new years debauchery should make for a good upcoming entry.

well, i hope so.

so tomorrow i leave for rockton, illinois to spend christmas with my grandma and my extended family. it's doubtful that i'll have access to internet while i'm there, but i'll also keep taking pictures with each day, and it's likely on the night of the 26th (when i return) that there'll be some bulk entry covering all 5 days i was gone. hopefully.

in case i don't get to talk to you (my loyal reader), i wish you all a safe, fun, and memorable holidays. God bless, always.

[Current Music |the elected - it was love]

today was very interesting. i walked around farmington some, just taking in my old town, and got a few decent snapshots. the bulk of the pictures in this particular journal are from this walk. it's getting harder and harder to find truly beautiful places in farmington, and i fear that soon it will be just another soul-less, generic suburb. with that being said, the park is always a great place to find inspiration, and it remains somewhat unchanged. even when you're deep into the park and you seem alone, it's sad to see a building in the distance or some sort of tower. to be truly alone with nature is something i haven't really experienced in quite some time.

enjoy!

down to a special place [Dec. 19th, 2007|11:56 pm]

[Current Music |john mayer - great indoors]

so here marks the beginning of the heralded picture journal. i had mentioned before that despite trying to think of a bit more artistic theme than just "here's my day", it's pretty much come down to that, not only from an ease of use standpoint, but also because that in and of itself is kinda interesting. i will say that i will not restrict myself to just "this is what i did today" pictures, and if i see something cool or interesting that i want to take a photo of, or multiple photos of, i'll do it. this run of journals is essentially going to be "here's what i enjoy taking pictures of". hopefully it'll be good.

with that being said, this first day was not a very good day for pictures. i didn't have access to a decent camera until later tonight, and by then i had to go to the wolves game. so, if things aren't great on this first one, don't worry, it'll pick up.

and so, without further adieu......my picture journal.
